R16 studio

August 2018 to March 2021

R16 studio was the site of the decommissioned Tokyu Toyoko Line (from Yokohama to Sakuragicho station), which divides the old city district from the new city area (Minatomirai). Plans have been underway to convert the top section of the elevated railway into a pedestrian walkway by fiscal year 2021. With these developments underway, a project to utilize the dormant underpass sections as a short-term studio/atelier facility took shape. R16 was situated on a 16-block, 100-meter zone from the Takashimacho intersection (where the 2nd generation Yokohama Station once stood) toward the Sakuragi-cho district (a 6-minute walk from BankART Station). In principle, this space was a workspace, but it was also open to the public on a timely basis for open studios, workshops, and other events.

BankART Temporary

May 2020 to March 2021

Located at the historic former Daiichi Bank building in Bashamichi Station on the Minato Mirai Line, this art space was used for several years by BankART1929 when Yokohama City's Creative City Projects was launched in 2004. After having changed hands several times, BankART will resume management of the building in fiscal year 2020.
The Kitanaka district where this building sits has changed significantly from the past and is now lined with high-rise condominiums, hotels, and the new City Hall headquarters. During its relatively short term, this facility, like BankART's other facilities, stayed active while opening its doors to the public.

In 2008, the entire building was completely renovated for use as a venue for the Yokohama Triennale. The 3,000 square meters of the concrete building featured multiple exhibition spaces, a hall created by the artist Tadashi Kawamata, a production studio, a café and pub, a shop, and a library that doubles as a seminar room. The entire renovation was designed by the architectural design group, "Mikangumi."
